While not an incorporated city, Vancleave is a census-designated place within Jackson County MS and part of the Pascagoula MS Metropolitan Statistical Area. It lies about 15 miles northeast of Biloxi, 40 miles from Mobile, AL, and about 92 miles from New Orleans, LA. Primarily rural, Vancleave produces cotton, corn, pecans, honey, as well as timber and catfish.
During the 1990s, Vancleave’s population experienced a growth spurt of more than 50%. As of the 2000 census, there were more than 4,900 people in 1,624 households. Of those households, more than 40% had children under the age of 18. Vancleave students attend schools at Vancleave Attendance Center, which is part of the Jackson County School District, and has 1 high school, 1 middle school, 3 elementary schools, and an alternative school. Higher education students can attend the Gulf Coast Community College and University of Southern Mississippi in Gautier, The University of South Alabama, and Tulane.
It is easy commuting from Vancleave to work, shopping, medical facilities, recreation, and cultural centers. Just over 11 miles from Gautier MS, Vancleave residents can go shopping at the Singing River Mall in downtown Gautier which offers more than 80 retail shops and restaurants.
There are recreational opportunities including a covered horse arena, golfing at “The Preserve” several ball fields, hunting, fishing, boating, and observing the abundant wild life all within the immediate vicinity.
