Thinking of Retiring in Jackson County MS?
Jackson County MS is the place along the Gulf Coast where most retirees live. Some of the retirees who settle here include former military personnel from Keesler Air Force Base which is located in Biloxi, MS, who like the easy access to the base to take advantage of their retirement benefits. But other retirees from around the country have found Mississippi’s many advantages for retirees, and find Jackson County appealing.
Among the many things that make Jackson County attractive for retirees is the tax structure. Mississippi is tax-friendly for retirees not only because it offers lower property values, even for affordable waterfront homes, but retirees 65 and over receive an additional bonus – an exemption on property taxes. In addition to the generally low taxes, retirees living in Mississippi do not pay any state income tax on their qualified retirement income.
Nearly a quarter of the population of Jackson County is 55 or older and health and medical services are a particular concern for retirees. There are two hospitals and convenient clinics within Jackson County. Additionally, there are fully-staffed medical and surgical care hospitals within 15 minutes of each of the 21 Certified Retirement Cities scattered throughout the state. Jackson County is part of the MS Gulf Coast Area which is designated as one of the Certified Retirement Cities.
The temperate climate of the Gulf Coast affords year-round outdoor activities, including year-round golfing, sailing, and motor boating. The panoramic views of the coastline offer many breath-taking vistas. Many activities await retirees such as world-class golfing on five courses open to the public and 3 private courses in Jackson County. The St. Andrews Golf Club in Ocean Springs MS offers a challenging round of golf right on the Gulf.
You could also venture out for a day of championship fishing on the many lakes and rivers or for over 200 species of fish on the Gulf in a charter boat out of Pascagoula, MS. Then top off your day with dinner at a local seafood restaurant. Additional activities and recreation in the area include museums, and movie theaters.
