Pascagoula, Mississippi
Pascagoula MS is a principal city in the Pascagoula Mississippi Metropolitan Statistical Area which covers two counties: Jackson and George. Pascagoula is the County Seat of Jackson County and has a population of approximately 26,000. Pascagoula is also part of the Gulfport-Biloxi-Pascagoula Combined Statistical Area which is comprised of five counties in the Mississippi Gulf Coast Region.
Pascagoula is located 34 miles from Biloxi, 40 miles from Mobile, AL, and 110 miles from New Orleans, LA, but you won’t need to go that far for some family fun and entertainment. Pascagoula Parks and Recreation as well as Chevron have developed new playgounds. The downtown merchants and other special groups host events such as the Easter Parade, a Fourth of July Fireworks display, Trunk ‘R Treat, Downtown for the Holidays and much more.
Besides the parks, the Pascagoula Parks and Recreation department has also provided the community with tennis courts, jogging trails, lighted ball fields, a soccer complex, a museum, and a nature center. Golf enthusiasts can enjoy a round or two of golf at the Pascagoula Country Club.
Pascagoula, Mississippi’s economy is steeped in industry and is home to the state’s largest employers, Ingalls Shipbuilding, which is owned by Northrop Grumman Ship Systems. Chevron has one of its largest refineries in Pascagoula as well other companies in the oil industry. The Mobile Regional Airport, the Gulfport-Biloxi International and the Trent Lott International Airport all provide air services to Pascagoula.
As of the 2000 census, there were 9,878 households, and over one-third of those households had children under the age of 18 living in them. Education for the students of Pascagoula is provided by the Pascagoula School District which also serves the city of Gautier and community of Hickory Hills. The school district educated 6,956 students in 2007 on campuses including 2 high schools, three middle schools, 11 elementary schools and three specialty campuses.
