Ocean Springs MS
Ocean Springs MS is located in Jackson County across the bay from Biloxi, 91 miles from New Orleans, LA, and 59 miles from Mobile, AL. There is a population of approximately 18,000 people. The area offers beautiful homes, excellent schools, and plenty of activities to fill your leisure time.
Ocean Springs, MS is one of the oldest cities in the nation and is also called “The City of Discovery” in recognition of the French who in 1699 established a beachhead on where the city now sits. However, the French lost its hold on the area to the English who held control of the area until the Spanish declared war on England. Ultimately, the area came under the United States domain and Mississippi acquired statehood in 1817.
Mineral springs in the area were sought after for their healing waters and the name of the area was once called Lynchburg Springs after George Lynch when the first post office was established. Dr. William G. Austin erected a large hotel to accommodate the travelers seeking therapy in the springs and named his hotel Ocean Springs. Later when the city was incorporated, it took its official name from the hotel.
In November 1870 the railroad line extended from Mobile to New Orleans and tourists came to utilize the spas. The rail also made it possible for a new seafood industry to develop and soon oysters were shipped to markets in the East and Midwest. The Ocean Springs Packing Company, a canning plant, made it possible to process seafood before shipping to market.
The city offers a wealth of history, good Southern cuisine, art galleries, specialty and antique shops, beautiful bayous, and excellent schools. Visitors are encouraged to visit the historic and growing commercial districts for some unique shopping experiences, and spend some time relaxing in the many parks and green spaces. For family activities, there are plenty of things to do including such activities as basketball, football, softball, and soccer.
Education for Ocean Springs students is provided by Ocean Springs School District which has kept pace with the growth of the Gulf Coast. The district works to ensure that all students have the opportunity to attend school in a nurturing atmosphere and receive their education from the best available educators.
